Once upon a time, I used to promote the usage of fat pencils for toddlers and lower primary students as they started to learn to write for the first time.
Over the years, I’ve discovered more benefits of using the regular, thinner pencils for children. Here are some of them:
• encourage proper grip
• more precise fine motor skill practice
• easier to sharpen
• more legible handwriting as a result of a more defined point
These simple yet positive attributes help children to have a more successful day of writing.
Test it out with your child today. What changes occur? Notice if they:
• switch hands when the thickness of the pencil changes
• experience any pain in their fingers, hands, or wrists
• write larger or smaller letters
Let us know your thoughts.
Do fat pencils or thin pencils work better for your little one?
Let’s continue to invest in our children as whole beings – fueling their mind, body, and spirit.
Let’s do this!
