Â
I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
By the time I spoke with the third principal, IÂ was done.
They have names!
Since Hurricane Dorian, behind the scenes, the Board of Arete Academy Foundation (a registered charity in Bermuda, #995) have been meeting and discussing regularly how we may help.
We’ve decided to focus on assisting those students that have been displaced by the wrath of Hurricane Dorian to reach and maintain some form of academic stability.
Up until now, much time has been dedicated to strategizing how to make a dent in the mega crisis in a fellow island nation.
It wasn’t until yesterday, as I prepare to travel to the Bahamas next week to begin our grassroots efforts with Bahamians, that it hit me and hit me hard.
They have names.
The crisis was becoming more intimate now as the finer details were being shared.
To hear the voices on the other end of the phone asking when are we coming, providing a list of things needed, and detailing the lives of the students they’ve taken in – detail by minute detail.
I learned of their struggles.
I learned of their living conditions.
IÂ learned about them.
They were once like our children. Unbothered about life – living like tomorrow was promised.
Probably screaming at the top of their lungs while playing on the field with friends,
begging their parents for that one snack in the grocery store,
eating dinner with their family,
petting their pets, and/or
catching up on the latest on the worldwide web.
Turn the clock forward to the day that Hurricane Dorian eventually passed.
Friends gone.
A parent(s)/sibling gone.
Pets gone.
House gone.
Yet, they’re alive and still must go on living.
What is that – ‘living’ –Â to them now?
I don’t know and will not even try to explain how one pushes through.
IÂ do know that we are blessed.
Blessed to be alive and to be able to help them.
Let’s try to limit any further academic disruption to their lives.
If you want to help, contact us to learn how.
Let’s continue to invest in our children as whole beings – fueling their mind, body, and spirit.
Best,
~Miss. Tamika
